Dyslipidemia is a term used to describe abnormalities in the level of certain fats (lipids and lipoproteins) in the blood stream. It can be caused by inherited problems in the body’s ability to handle some fats in the diet, by the excess eating of those foods, or by a combination of those factors.
Abnormalities in these lipids can be a cause of heart disease (cardiovascular disease).
Lipids are usually measured in the blood in the following forms:
1.Cholesterol
2.Triglycerides - TGs
3.High density lipoprotein (HDL) – The “good” cholesterol
4.Low density lipoprotein (LDL) – The “bad” cholesterol
Extensive reasearch has shown a link between heart disease and dyslipidemia. You should at least get your cholesterol value and when you have this come back and perform your MyHeartRisk personal heart risk assessment.
