There are many different abnormalities in heart rhythm that create less efficient pumping of blood; some are inherited and some are acquired.
One form of arrhythmia, which can be either primary (genetic) or secondary to atherosclerosis or other heart disease, is atrial fibrillation (AF).
Symptoms of AF may include: heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and weakness. The presence of AF in an individual increases that individual's risk for heart disease and a cardiovascular disease event such as a heart attack or stroke.
