Normally each of our cells contains 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs

To understand human chromosomes we need to look into the cells of our bodies.

Each of our cells normally has 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs.  There are exceptions to this for people with abnormal chromosomes.

Human chromosomes are similar to chromosomes in all living creatures.

Chromosome inheritance

Chromosome inheritance is the way we inherit 23 of our chromosomes from each of our parents. Chromosomes contain all of our genetic information in genes. Genes contain the genetic information that we inherit from our parents and pass on to our children.

Research is ongoing into how genes effect heart disease but this is not yet fully understood however we do know that heart problems can be passed through a family.

If there is someone in your family with a heart condition then it is important that you perform your assessment as this will tell you the extra risk of you having heart disease.

Human chromosomes are much to small to see without a microscope but they are how each of us got here.
