Understanding genetic heart disease

Genetic heart disease refers to an individual's likely hood to suffer from a heart complaint due to an inherited predisposition, sometimes called a family weakness.

The science of genetic heart disease includes the study of chromosomes which contain the messengers (genes) of inheritance.

The remarkable work, started in 1990, of the Human Genome Project (HGP) to map the human genome has already proven invaluable to genetic researchers and will make many improvements to this field in the years to come.

Molecular genetics has for some time given health care professionals the means to look at genetic structures at a molecular level for research, diagnosis and treatment of genetic heart disease.
